BREAKING! Beheading Attack in Oklahoma

Workers at a food processing plant in Oklahoma were stabbed by an ex-co-worker. One victim's head was severed by the attacker.

From NewsOK.com:
MOORE — An incident at a Moore food distribution center left one woman dead, and two people injured, Moore police reported Thursday.

Officers found two women stabbed and a man shot inside Vaughan Foods, Inc., 216 NE 12, in what has been described as an incident of workplace violence. One of the women was pronounced dead.

[...]

Shortly before 4:15 p.m., callers told police someone was being stabbed in a fit of workplace violence. Minutes later, police received calls of an active shooter situation at the same location, [police Sgt. Jeremy] Lewis said.
Details are still coming in, but here's a timely observation about the "shooting" part (from WREG):
Investigators said, Mark Vaughan, a Oklahoma County reserve deputy and former CEO of the business, shot [Suspect] as he was stabbing [Victim #2].

"He’s a hero in this situation," Sgt. Lewis said, referring to Vaughan. "It could have gotten a lot worse."
But... But... But guns are never used to stop crimes. Shannon Watts said it, I believe it, that settles it.

Also being reported is the attacker's recent conversion to Islam and his efforts at converting his co-workers. Because of this, the FBI has been called in to assist in the investigation. I have my thoughts on whether the suspect's religious views are related to the attack, but we're waiting for official confirmation.

[UPDATE: 11:52 am PDT] MSNBC is reporting, No Evidence Oklahoma Beheading Linked to Terrorism, Police Say. My opinion: No evidence doesn't necessarily mean no link. The attack itself may have been (and probably was) a dangerous and violent man's vendetta for being fired, but nobody decapitates a victim as a matter of course, especially not with what amounts to a kitchen knife (commercial model, but not significantly different from anything in your home kitchen). I believe he was using the brutality to make a statement, but only he can tell us what, exactly, that statement is. [/UPDATE]

[UPDATE 2: 2:27 pm PDT] William A. Jacobson, who runs the most-excellent Legal Insurrection blog (which is on your frequent-read list, right?), notes that disenfranchised workers now have an option between "going postal" and "going ISIS". Given the gravity of the events, I'm not sure how to feel about it, but it is a powerful insight. [/UPDATE 2]

I would note, however, that the first Fort Hood shooting was perpetrated by a practicing Muslim — who communicated with known Islamic extremists terrorists and referred to himself as a "Soldier of Allah" — but that attack was officially classified as a "workplace violence" incident as well.

I'll try to keep this post updated as new information comes in. Stay safe out there.

  1. I'm on CCN watch:

With an avowed Islamist beheader (Islam is a religion of peace) being stopped by a citizen with a CCW firearm (guns never solve anything), CNN is facing cognitive dissonance of monumental proportions. They have yet to broadcast this story.

    The Over/Under is Never.

Other outlets are implying that the citizen was a police officer, but at the time he was only a CCW carrier. Good on him, he saved many lives.

    1. I'd read some reports (but couldn't find them later) that the CEO who shot the suspect had shot him with a rifle, and ALL reports - and the police spokesman - practically fell over themselves asserting he a part-time deputy, off-duty at the time ... an "Only One", so us common folk shouldn't try this at home.

CNN will eventually get to it, when they can figure out how to spin it in such a way that the suspect's faith is left out entirely, he wasn't stopped by an innocent bystander's gunshot, and he was "turning his life around": just a church choir boy coming back from reading stories to elderly blind tuberculosis patients.

      Give them a couple hours.

    2. Oh, and CNN's spin will also likely include a "poor me" story about how he's a misunderstood individual who was fired by whitey for "working while black".

(BTW, thanks for the compliment below. :) )

    3. Rifle? Ho Lee Chit. Can you imagine the PSH if he used an AR-15 or some other EBR? CNN, CBS and MSNBC heads will be popping like our champagne corks. ;)

I did hear a radio report stating authoritatively that the executive's firearm was a concealed handgun. So... the likelihood of it being an EBR is pretty good.

    4. If this pans out like any other incident, it'll be all speculation for another week or two. We'll be lucky if his role isn't written completely out to maintain The Narrative.

Either way, rifle or handgun, massive KUDOS on the CEO who was armed with both a weapon and the wherewithal to use it judiciously. No doubt, he stopped the attack and saved many lives.

  2. Update:

"Authorities said Mark Vaughan, CFO of the company and a reserve Oklahoma County deputy, shot Nolen several times with a rifle." Colorado Channel 9

Vaughan is a member of the Oklahoma County Tactical Team. As such, he MAY have had his duty rifle with him.

  3. Found ONE article on this at CNN: http://www.cnn.com/2014/09/26/us/oklahoma-beheading/

Nothing new, really. It's actually more well-balanced than most of their stuff. They almost gloss over the "stopped by armed citizen" part, making damn sure to mention he's a reserve deputy, and note that the suspect and the surviving victim are in stable condition. They do mention the Islam conversion, too, but with the same disclaimer that there's no definite link between this "workplace violence" and any potential jihad.
