ARES Defense has created an AR-15 system compatible lower that eliminates the progressives' panty wadding pistol grip and unicorn killing collapsible stock. Their Sport Configurable Rifle (SCR) is essentially a redesigned AR-15 lower with a shotgun-like composite stock. It retains the magwell of the AR-15 and any compatible upper can be mounted. ARES redesigned the Bolt Carries Group (BCG) and the recoil path to fit the traditional stock. The result is essentially an AR, but with a slightly odd, but traditional look. With many of the laws restricting Modern Sporting Rifles, appearance is everything.
ARES claims their SCR is legal in every state - check your local laws to be damn sure. The SCR also eliminates the bayonet (flashlight or frickin' laser beam) mount and the uber deadly flashhider. Thankfully, the "shoulder thing that goes up" (barrel shroud) is kept.

The SCR is a lesson on the stupidity of the current crop of "Assault Weapon" laws. Anti-gun legislators demonized the AR-15's military-style appearance, wholesaling fears of "battlefield weapons" to an ignorant public. However, without that dangerous silhouette, the SCR is just another rifle. As the SCR and AR-15 are functionally the same, the politicians are left to explain just what is so deadly about a $5 plastic grip or a stock that at its most eeeevil only trims 3 inches off a 30" rifle. To ban these guns, politicians must rail against a relatively familiar shape to a populace growing increasingly skeptical of the elites' leadership.
But rail they will, so it is important that supporters of the RKBA (Right to Keep and Bear Arms) remain vigilant and resist the coming proposals to ban semi-autos, box magazines and military calibers. The ARES SCR is a teaching tool to show the fatal flaws of the politician's arguments.
For me, I can't wait till ARES sells the SCR lower. I'll mate it to my beloved DD 6.8 upper, and take it deer hunting without fear of exciting the other hunters. Don't forget, our friends need education, too.

ReplyDeleteYep. The populace is (finally) realizing that when politicians speak out against "assault weapons," they really mean "any/all useful firearms."

I agree. The politicians won't see it that way -- to them it'll be a "loophole" that needs to be closed -- but the people will realize that despite previous legislation focusing on the appearance of a firearm, the politicians don't really care what it looks like; they want them all banned.
I wish ARES luck with this, though I mourn the necessity of it.
